VTE Risk Assessment in Pregnancy (Antenatal)


Preexisting risk factor

  • Previous VTE (4)
  • High risk thrombophilia (3)
    • anti thrombin, protein C, protein S deficiency
  • Medical comorbidities (3)
    • malignancies
    • cardiac failure, active SLE
    • IVDU 
    • TB
    • nephrotic syndrome
    • DM with nephropathy
    • thalassemia major / intermedia
    • post splenectomy
  • Obesity
    • BMI  ≥ 40kg/m2 (2)
    • BMI 30-39 kg/m2 (1)
  • Family history of VTE (1)
  • Low risk thrombophilia (1)
    • Factor V Leiden
    • High FVIII
  • Current smoker  ≥ 10/day (1)
  • Twin / multiple pregnancy (1)


Interpretation of scoring (for antenatal only)

  • score  ≥ 4 : consider thromboprophylaxis from 1st trimester until post delivery
  • score 3 : consider prophylaxis from 28 weeks until 3 weeks postnatal
